This session, co-sponsored by the Quality Improvement SIG and the Faculty Development SIG, will engage participants in an interactive session focused on the development of skills to support a career involving quality improvement and patient safety. Our workshop will be divided into five sessions each highlighting an important area of QI faculty development. We will begin with a general overview of the QI and Faculty Development SIGs and a discussion of the evolving landscape of quality and safety. Via small and large group discussion we will review national training opportunities that are available to develop QI skills and knowledge. We will then provide an overview of exemplar institutional programs that provide QI training for faculty and trainees on a local level and engage participants in discussion regarding implementing local QI development programs. Our session will then cover the topic of QI portfolios as compared to educator portfolios and review how QI work can tie to academic promotion and publication efforts. We will conclude the session with a panel discussion led by individuals who have taken a wide variety of career pathways in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. These perspectives will include that of a Chief Quality Officer, QI educator, Clinical Pathways, Regulatory Compliance, QI research and measure development. Our panelists, Dr. Trey Coffey, Dr. Dan Hyman, Dr. Ann Burke, Dr. Patrick Brady, Dr. Michael Rinke, and Dr. Stephen Muething will give an overview of their current roles and career path, review training programs they found helpful, discuss how their roles integrate with other professionals in the healthcare setting, and describe how they incorporated QI work into their personal academic promotion process.
The target audience for this session includes pediatric clinicians and researchers who are interested in: 1) identifying opportunities to further develop their quality improvement skills or those of the faculty whom they supervise; 2) discussing the variety of career positions open to quality improvement leaders at various stages of an academic career; and 3) reviewing strategies to facilitate documentation of QI career accomplishments using a QI portfolio. This session will apply to all levels of individuals from trainees to senior faculty.
