Her decision to give birth at Mount Sinai West was very important to her. She wanted to give birth where she was able to communicate with her doctor, know that the doctor was listening, and determine the best plan for her and her baby. “Health care and listening to patients and determining where this goes is really important to all of us and that everybody gets equitable care,” said Dr. Lois Brustman, an OBGYN and maternal fetal medicine specialist at Mount Sinai West. In fact, Mount Sinai West has a committee which zeros in on the impact of social determinants of health, the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. Congratulations Neha Bansal, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, on her paper "Impact of Race and Health Coverage on Listing and Waitlist Mortality in Pediatric Cardiac Transplantation" being named as the Best Pediatric Heart Failure and Transplant Paper of 2023 by the ISHLT - International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) during this year's annual international scientific meeting. The work reviews the important question of impact of race and health insurance coverage on listing and waitlist mortality in pediatric heart transplantation and asks the difficult question about whether being black influences outcomes of transplantation and waitlist survival. According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Today, as a kick-off to #BlackMaternalHealth Week, we want to empower new Black mothers to seek the support they deserve. Mom of three, Safiya (pictured here), delivered all three of her babies vaginally at Mount Sinai West with Dr. Lewis-Morris. "Going into motherhood was definitely nerve wracking, reading all of the negative statistics and learning about the traumatic and tragic stories impacting many Black mothers. I was blessed and fortunate to have healthy pregnancies and excellent outcomes for myself and my babies both times around," Safiya shares. She most recently delivered her twins last year on Christmas Eve, five minutes apart. Having Dr. Lewis-Morris as her doctor was a very important decision for Safiya. "As a fellow African American woman, I felt like she understood me and my concerns as a Black woman." Safiya is very passionate about Black maternal health as an attorney and public health advocate. "We need to continue raising awareness about the preventable and negative health disparities impacting black mothers in the United States." #WeFindAWay
