Prof Peter Maassen of the University of Oslo warns of a growing threat to Academic Freedom in Europe, as highlighted by recent European Parliament studies. Threats include government interference, social media attacks, and private sector influence in various EU states. Existing legal safeguards may not be adequate, promoting the need for strengthened European and national policies. Maassen underscores the importance of academic community participation and advocates for democratizing science to safeguard academic freedom and public trust, particularly in light of lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic. Climate change poses an existential threat to society. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024 (https://lnkd.in/ezWRuKvN) identifies climate-related changes as some of the most severe risks over the next decade. Despite the severity of the situation, much of the knowledge needed to prevent the world from reaching an irreversible tipping point is not accessible. The majority of research related to climate change is locked away behind subscription paywalls. Science is a catalyst for change and opening science to all citizens is a prerequisite for effective climate action. Frontiers works with partners to build bridges between the research community and other parts of society such as global governance organizations, business, education, and policymakers. These partnerships, with organizations such as UNFCCC UN, World Economic Forum, The Villars Institute, and GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, allow us to amplify the benefits of open science. As Frontiers’ chief executive officer Frederick Fenter summarized, “To solve the climate emergency in time, we must all align to make science fully accessible to all. We all agree on this in principle, but we urgently need to make it happen in practice, now. Building coalitions of like-minded organizations with the vision and resources to move the needle, to drive awareness, and to show that there is hope through collaboration is a core part of our mission, and we welcome others to join us, because together we will make a difference.” Learn more about our partnerships ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ecD464vv #OpenScience #OpenAccess #ClimateChange #ClimateAction

Wrapping up an insightful time #UKSG2024, and we are excited to share some of the key insights and takeaways of this year's conference. 💡 OA publishing took center stage, highlighting the industry's push towards broader research dissemination. However, librarians are navigating complex challenges like tight budgets and sustainability concerns. 💡 Frontiers seized the opportunity to showcase how our innovative OA solutions can help tackle these issues head-on. Our booth was buzzing with discussions on how libraries can leverage our platform to support their OA goals. Three key trends emerged: 1️⃣ Sustainable models: there's a collective push to move past financially restrictive publishing practices. 2️⃣ Preprints' rise: libraries are embracing preprints as a tool for early dissemination. 3️⃣ Data-driven decision-making: with data analytics, libraries gain deeper insights into research performance and optimize their OA strategies. Join us on the journey towards broader open access research for all. Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eaNRQm9X #OpenAccess #OpenScience
